ABOUT US

Where

Cozumel is an island in the Caribbean Sea off the eastern coast of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, opposite the Playa del Carmen, and close to the Yucatan Channel. It is one of the ten municipalities of the state of Quintana Roo.
Cozumel is a popular tourist destination renowned for its scuba diving and snorkeling. The main town on the island is San Miguel de Cozumel.

Currency

Mexico's currency is the peso (MXN). The $ sign is used to refer to pesos, so don't be shocked at the price tags.

Any prices in U.S. dollars are listed as US$ or USD. Many hotels, restaurants and shops also accept major credit cards, which usually offer you a good exchange rate.

Government

Cozumel is part of the State of Quintana Roo. The Municipality of Cozumel consists of the island of Cozumel (with its offshore islets) and small pieces of adjacent mainland enclaved within the Municipality of Solidaridad. They are Calica and the Xel-Há Water Park.

Culture

It is believed that it was Cozumel's natural beauty which attracted the Maya centuries ago. This great culture of warriors ruled from Campeche to Guatemala 2,000 years before the arrival of the Spanish explorers.

They inhabited Cozumel from 300 A.D. to 1500 A.D. and remains of the Maya civilization are evident at San Gervasio (pronounced san-her-ba-see-oh). This was probably a capital city during ancient times. Today, it's the island's largest existing archaeological site.

Covering an area of about 10 acres and situated in a beautiful, cool forest, this park and restoration project give us glimpses into the ancient Maya civilization.

How do I get Cozumel?

There are direct flights from many points in the United States and Canada to Cozumel.

Otherwise, you can fly into the city of Cancun on the mainland and take one of Aerocozumel's Island Hopper Flights. This is quick and easy, about a 20 minute flight. It's a handy way to come here just for a day.

The boats takes you from Playa del Carmen to Cozumel island in about 45 min. It is an air conditioned passenger ferry with comfortable seating, music, and videos. The ferries leave as early as 6 a.m. and run about every hour until 9 p.m.

Cruise ships stop at Cozumel nearly every single day.

Things to do

Atlantis Submarines runs every day. There are over 100 restaurants on the island and many hotels, which have large swimming pools, private docks, multiple dining facilities, and offer complete wedding and honeymoon packages

Weather/Climate

Weather in Cozumel is most of the year hot. With a subtropical climate the average temperature is about 27°C - 80°F, and because Cozumel is surrounded by water the climate is always humid often around 90%. But we can say normally all year long you will be able to find sunny days with the usually warm waters.
